Utah Mesothelioma Attorneys

History

Asbestos is a substance that was used in numerous commercial and consumer applications.  One of its major benefits was fire retardation.  By the 1930s and '40s, medical evidence had clearly linked asbestos exposure to lung disease and deadly asbestos cancers. Although asbestos companies were warned of these dangers, many chose not to use alternative substances in order to keep their profits high. Mesothelioma litigation exists because of these unethical actions and asbestos manufacturers are held liable for the undue suffering of those coping with asbestos-related disease.

Injuries

Asbestos causes damage to the lungs.  Years after exposure to asbestos, many people develope a form of cancer called mesothelioma.  Mesothelioma is rarely seen in people who have not been exposed to asbestos.  About 2,000 to 3,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.  Because asbestos has been pulled from the market, we expect the number of new cases to peak in 2010.  There are several types of mesothelioma.  The types and common symptoms of each type are:

  • Pleural Mesothelioma -- shortness of breath, chest pain, persisten cough, fatigue, lumps under the skin
  • Peritoneal Mesothelioma -- weight loss, abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, bowel obstruction, nausea
  • Pericardial Mesothelioma -- Heart palpitations, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, difficulty breathing, night sweats
  • Testicular Mesothelioma -- Painful or painless testicular lumps

Mesothelioma is usually fatal within one year of diagnosis.

Treatment

Some treatment options for mesothelioma are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.  While still considered experimental, some patients also receive immunotherapy and gene therapy treatments.
