Healthy women have reported developing clots after taking Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella birth control pills.  These clots can appear anywhere in the body.  If they occur in the deep veins of the legs, it is called Deep Vein Thrombosis.  If the clot occurs in the brain, or another clot breaks loose and travels to the brain, a woman suffers a stroke.  A stroke is an extremely serious medical condition because during a stroke, a portion of the brain is deprived of oxygen.  If the blood flow and the oxygen are not restored quickly, the brain tissues may die and the woman will suffer a loss of functioning.  The loss of function depends on the part of the brain injured by stroke.

Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella increase the likelihood of suffering a stroke.  Because a stroke can happen quickly, immediate medical attention is crucial.  If you believe you may be suffering a stroke, call 911 immediately.  Time is of the essence.

At the emergency room, the first priority is to restore a victim's heart rate and breathing.  Once those have been stabilized, tests are routinely given to diagnose a stroke.  Typical tests are CT scans and MRI scans.

Doctors frequently administer thrombolytic drugs.  Those drugs help dissolve blood clots and restore normal blood flow to the brain.  In severe cases, a tissue plasminogen activator (tPa) may be administered in order to re-establish blood flow to the brain.  Another option a physician may choose is to perform a carotid endarterectomy to remove the clot.  All of these procedures have risks.  One of the risks is additional strokes.
